The Garden of Earthly Delights

In Bosch's Hell panel, a man hangs crucified across the strings of a giant harp. Another is crushed inside a lute. A third is folded into the crank of a hurdy-gurdy. In Bosch's century, music was associated with worldly pleasure and especially with sexual sin. Pleasure becomes punishment. The instruments are accurate enough to identify by model.
