Portrait of Lucrezia Panciatichi

Lucrezia Panciatichi wears a heavy gold necklace across her chest. Look at the links closely: each link is a tiny letter. Together they read AMOUR DURE SANS FIN — French for 'love endures without end'. It was almost certainly a wedding gift from her husband Bartolomeo Panciatichi, a wealthy Florentine banker who commissioned this portrait along with his own from Bronzino. The pair are hung together at the Uffizi. Bronzino painted the letters so precisely you can read them from three metres away. Lucrezia was 24. She died at 55.
