At the Moulin Rouge

Toulouse-Lautrec was a Moulin Rouge regular; many faces here are recognisable performers and friends. The figure at the right edge, lit gas-light green, is the dancer May Milton. Lautrec himself stands at the back-left, beside his much taller cousin. The painting was kept from public view for years; gallerists cut off the right-edge figure and only restored it after Lautrec died. Now at Art Institute of Chicago, Chicago @artinstitutechi
